The Music of Sui Sin Far

This section of the project contains recordings of songs referenced by Sui Sin Far in her work. Although I strove to locate as many of the songs as I could, there were some that I was unable to reliably identify and locate (e.g., traditional Chinese songs referenced only vaguely). It is important to note that most of the songs I was able to locate were of European or North American origin, leading to gaps in referenced songs of Chinese origin despite Sui Sin Far’s desire to honor her ancestry and the Chinese communities she came to know and love in her writing. In my search, I made it a requirement to find sheet music of the referenced song published before the publication of the work Sui Sin Far references the song in. I have provided links to this sheet music on the relevant pages. Due to this requirement, it was necessary for me to record the songs myself. As such, each recording is of me singing the melody a cappella (i.e., without accompanying instruments), and the sound quality is poorer than desired. This format is limiting since it most often does not capture the full sound of the song (many of which are meant to be sung with piano or with multiple voice parts), but I hope that it is sufficient to shine some light on the sounds Sui Sin Far was likely thinking of as she was writing.
